Reducing Pain
Laser therapy, often referred to as Photobiomodulation, has the effect of reducing pain and inflammation as well as increasing micro-circulation. The end result if a rapid healing of damaged muscle tissue. High performance animals such as horses and greyhounds place enormous strain on their muscles on race day. This is where the VetLaser 3000 comes into effect.
An analgesic effect is achieved using Cold Laser Therapy including:
- Increase in the release of beta endorphins
- Decreased bradykinin levels within the surrounding tissues
- Increased release of acetylcholine
- Stabilization of the action potentials within the individual nerve cells
- An increase in serotonin levels
Photobiomodulation
There are four broad areas where photobiomodulation is of great benefit to treating injured horses:
- To quicken the the rehabilitation and healing of many common lameness disorders.
- To maintain the peak performance of the horse
- To prevent the occurrence or recurrence of athletic injuries.
- As an essential component of stem cell and PRP treatment protocols
The recent adoption of a MeSH term “Photobiomodulation Therapy” symbolizes the unique nature of this therapy.
The following is from the North Amercian Association for Photbiomodulation
NAALT endorses and encourages the use this terminology and defines Photobiomodulation Therapy as “A form of light therapy that utilizes non-ionizing forms of light sources, including LASERS, LEDs, and broad-band light, in the visible and infrared spectrum. It is a non-thermal process involving endogenous chromophores eliciting photophysical (i.e. linear and non-linear) and photochemical events at various biological scales. This process results in beneficial therapeutic outcomes including but not limited to the alleviation of pain or inflammation, immunomodulation, and promotion of wound healing and tissue regeneration.”

Lameness
Combining deep-penetrating laser therapy with traditional therapeutic regimens accelerates the recovery time of many common lameness disorders in horses.
Laser Therapy Applications
Several of the most common applications of laser therapy for the treatment of lameness disorders include:
- Tendon and suspensory injuries such as tears and tendinitis
- Osteoarthritis
- Back soreness
- Synovitis and tenosynovitis
- Healing of wounds
Horse Performance Products
Therapeutic lasers are used in veterinary rehabilitation applications. Veterinary laser therapy has proven time and again to be the best product for horse recovery, particularly for equine performance injuries, eg fetlocks, pastern and suspensory ligaments. Veterinary photobiomodulation therapy (often referred to PBM or PBMT) is an ideal form of horse performance product that is safe, effective, easy to use and best of all, is drug-free.
The VetLaser 3000 is an equine therapy product manufactured in Australia and is sold world-wide.
Positive Outcomes
Horses and dogs often injure themselves during both training and racing. This results in pain and soreness in the animal. Laser therapy treatments allow horses these to recover quicker and thus train more effectively.
Cold Laser Therapy penetrates deep into muscle tissue, establishing blood flow and elasticity within the tissues of the suspensory tendon in an equine athlete predisposed to stress in this area before competing.
Cold Laser Therapy is one of the best treatment modalities for treating injured horses.
